Shelf is Finished……"How To" Included at bottom of Post

Hope you like it….. Before and After

How To Make Your Own Shelf to house your "Art" paints

To Make Shelf:  We used Pine boards (I should say Brian used)

Cut as many boards as you want your shelf to be high (We cut 12)

34.5 inches wide (or desired width)

1.75 inches deep

2 - 56 inch pieces for the sides

Mark off your row spaces on the 56 inch board. Mine are spaced mostly 5" apart. (so I have a full 5 inches for my paint containers) And the top 4 rows are spaced 3 inches apart.

Glue and Nail (we used Gorilla Glue and 2 inch finish nails)

Paint, Stain or leave unfinished as desired!

Hang with 4 L brackets, one in each corner.

Now for the REAL FUN, the Background:

(and yes, I know you won't see most of it after the paint is on the shelf, but what a treat when you pull some paint off and see the fun images behind, doesn't take much to make me happy! LOL)

Sketch out the inside shape of your shelf so you know where to place your book pages. (or use old newsprint, sewing patterns, scrapbook paper…)

I did not have wallpaper paste and chose to use Starch Glue.

Recipe for Potato Starch Glue: (I would think you could use cornstarch instead)

I made way too much and wound up using only about a cup of paste so I'll give you the recipe for that. Double it if you want to be certain to have enough.

1.25 cup water
1/8 cup of potato starch, make sure it's starch and not flour

Let's get started!

1. Rip out pages from an old book, I used a Hymnal.

2. Using an old brush, brush glue on one page. In the interest of saving time, I glued the whole page then ripped it as desired. (I wore rubber gloves too)

3. Place on wall and I used the separator from an old binder (they used to be hard plastic) to rub over the paper to get out the air bubbles and excess paste. Keep a damp sponge handy to wipe off the extra paste and keep the paper clean on top.

4. Keep applying paper until the whole surface is covered. Let dry.

5. Paint, Stencil, Draw, Markers. I pretended I was doing an art journal page as that is my current fun thing to do! (I used the inexpensive acrylic paint)

Enjoy!

Journaling About My Art Journal, and Wall Art

How is everyone?!

I think I'm coming down with a cold…. BUT, the good news is, we had spring like weather yesterday and it was awesome!

So, I'm writing, in part, to talk about my Art Journaling. I've been having so much fun with it, lots of doodling. But the other day I began to think about how I want to express myself, I mean my own style. I started to think I didn't have one, my own style I mean. I was just having one of those days, blah.
This is absurd, we ALL have our own style…. whether we are courageous enough to share, show it off, let others see it, is another thing. Embrace it I say!!

So, I'm still in the throws of learning how to use my supplies and to do that I watch a lot of You Tube videos. I have my favorite channels and I also enjoy watching Ustream…. Lots of sharing people out there, a great community of artists that are not afraid to show you what they do and how they do it. I owe them a BIG thank you!

Learning is FUN!

Then I sat down and did a journal page, not thinking about what I was doing and before I knew it, I was on the page and looked a bit sad. Which made me then think of my friend Wendy that was killed on black friday this past year. (2013) Oh, you want to see it?

I call it, "Sista from Another Mista"

She used to say that we were Sistas and made that expression up one day.

So that's me on the left (Do I look like I have my own style? LOL) I really do look like that….. and Wendy on the right. Talk about your own style, this woman was ONE OF A KIND! She always wore bright red lipstick, she was beautiful, inside and out.
I had a good cry when I was done. I sure do miss her…

Ok, so I'm getting sidetracked as usual. I wanted to tell you about my "Wall Art". I decided I needed a shelf in my art room to house my paint. I saw a wonderful shelf on a new blog site that I recently started to follow… Tracy Weinzapfel's Studio ~ Check her out! Awesome artist, very inspiring!

Loved it so much I asked the Hub to make me something like it.

I like everything OUT and available for the eyes…. (I've also been working on the area where I sit to do my work, trying to surround myself with my supplies, Don't you find it annoying when you have to trot around the room a million times to get your stuff?!)

So I asked the carpenter in my life, my hub, if he could whip one up and before I knew it, he did. AWESOME job Brian!

So because it doesn't have a back on it I decided it needed something and one thing led to another and I started gluing hymnals pages (from an old beat up hymn book) to the wall. Then the stamps came out, then acrylic paint…. I had so MUCH FUN! Now I want to run around and paint all the walls!

I must digress and tell you a story… when I was a little girl I got ahold of my moms lipsticks and crawled behind the sofa and drew pictures on the wall. It was MONTHS til she found it, when she moved the furniture one day…. The wall art reminded me of that day so long ago.

So here's the first part of it: The Background

I'll show you the rest after he hangs the shelf.

I'm noticing I say So, ALOT… wonder what that's all about. Well, until I figure that out….

Have a Blessed Day!

TOO Much Snow! And Not Enough Blogging!

Oh my, where to start? I can't believe it's been three weeks! Where does the time go? Well, I was off to a good start….

I have been plucking away at my goals, making phone calls, doing research, BUT...

Lets talk about my daily planner. That planner and my timer was working like a charm and then all of sudden all this snow came (I live in PA) and I don't know what happened. I feel like I'm outside every two hours digging a path for Gus. And then there's the wood stove. With my hub out plowing snow I'm tending to the fire but not doing a very good job of it…. And then there's my art therapy.

Ah…. that's where I went…. <g> Did I happen to mention that I got some nice art supplies for xmas? Well, I cleaned up my art room and sorted through all my supplies, decided I wanted to have them OUT where I could see them. That took a full week to re-organize.
sidebar: (I'm looking at my planner right now in fact, I don't just write down what I have to do I also write down what I actually did, they are never the same thing!) And I never remember what I did yesterday let alone last week!

So I've been doodling, drawing, painting, crocheting, knitting, journaling, making stamps, trying to make stencils and I did a "work along" thing with a wonderfully talented girl on You Tube and Ustream (my new addiction). I'll post a picture below. She did this ten step creative process thing and I absolutely LOVED it! Trying to get her to do another one…. So you're dying to know what I mean right? Well, the first thing you do is gather certain supplies, we used cereal boxes for the base. Then she tells you what to do, like get paint on the surface, you have three minutes… she keeps doing that, each step different. You're not supposed to have time to think about what you are doing so you wind up just doing it and it was a blast!

Serious FUN! Her name is Journalartista and you can find her on You Tube and Ustream. Tell her I sent you if you go over.

I'm not sure what I'll do with mine, she was making postcards with hers. Aren't they COOL?! These are my own stamps on there, made them last week. Simple city….

I am starting to feel a wee bit guilty however and must get back on some sort of schedule. Soon. This week in fact.

But first, I'd like to show you what else I have been making:

My Rattie Rag Bag Baskets…. isn't it pretty! If you want to see more of my work you can visit my Flickr page. I've made about a dozen baskets in different colors and sizes. I plan on selling them in my Etsy shop (some day soon if I can get it on my planner!)

Check it out, I also have some of my paper and fabric flowers in there. Let me know what you think.

Etsy My Arts and Parts

The last thing I'll show you is my watercolor pictures in my "Flower" Art Journal. I'm so into art journaling right now….. LOVE it!
So I watched another VERY talented Ustreamer, TWStudios, she inspired me to NO END, so much in fact that I ran out today and purchased the water color paints that she was using. They are AWESOME and not expensive at all. Here's what I wound up with:

It's not the best picture, but you can get the idea.

And here's my last one:

I used my Inktense Watercolor Pencils to do this. I'm just learning so don't be too critical. <g>

Oh, before I forget, I also figured out how to use my camera/recorder thing that I got for xmas. Made a little video of my mom, figured out how to edit it etc. I'm hoping to do some You Tube videos at some point.

Well, reading back over all this, I was quite productive the last few weeks after all!
